Message from the Mayor, Mr. Athos Eleftheriou

We would like to welcome you to the website of the Municipality of Lapithos that was created in 2004. Its main objective is to inform every person from Lapithos and other parties interested in, as well as, outside Cyprus about the occupied Municipality of Lapithos and its organised bodies.

In our website you can find data on the history of Lapithos ever since its foundation 3000 years ago that reaches to the present day. Also information regarding the occupations and activities of its inhabitants, its most important personalities that have honoured and continue to honour with their work their birthplace and Cyprus, is provided therein.

You can also find information on the invasion and occupation of Lapithos by the Turkish invaders in the summer of 1974, on the displacement of its inhabitants from their homes and properties, today’s situation and the activity of the organised bodies of Lapithos as refugees.

Our aim is to provide an objective view on historical truth on everything that regards Lapithos and its people and at the same time to highlight our struggle for a fair solution to our political problem and return to our beloved town. We struggle for a return that should be realised in conditions of safety and dignity without occupying forces and settlers, where human rights and basic freedoms for all Cypriots are safeguarded.

We aspire to be able to have a source of communication through this website with our people abroad, the Cypriot diaspora, as well as with other researchers studying and struggling for historical truth on Lapithos, therefore most of the content will be provided not only in Greek, but also in English.

We remain at everyone’s disposal in order to provide any information and aid that would be of help, within our capacity.

This website also presents the activities and events organised by the Municipality of Lapithos, photographs from Lapithos, both before and after 1974, the newsletter of the Municipality and many more useful information.

It would please us enormously to receive your comments and observations in connection with the content and the appearance of our website, as well as your opinion and suggestions on the overall activities and the contribution of our Municipality.
