The prolific activity of the Lapithos Municipality in 2009
presented at 3 all town meetings

The Lapithos Municipality realized most successfully 3 all-town meetings in mid-March, in which it informed Lapithians on the activities of the Municipality in 2009 and it also presented the activities planned for 2010.

The meetings took place on the 12th of March in Pafos, the 15th of March in Limassol and on the 18th March in Nicosia.

The Mayor, Mr. Athos Eleftheriou and the Town Council members informed their fellow citizens on the activities of their Municipality which are based on its 5-year plan for 2007-2011.

The Lapithians who participated at the meetings in their addresses appraised positively the work of the Municipality and assured everyone that they will continue to support its activities.

The most important activities for 2009 regarded the Cyprus problem: in several events the Turkish invasion and occupation was condemned and the will of the Lapithians to will fight together with their political leaders until their vindication and return to their beloved town in conditions of safety and dignity where human rights and basic freedoms would be safeguarded was expressed.

Indicatively are mentioned the events that were realized by the 9 occupied Municipalities on the 9th of July and the 15th of November, as well as by the three Municipalities of the Kyrenia District on the 8th of June and on the 16th, 19th, 22nd and on the 29th until the 31st of July.

The visits of the Mayor to London and Greece, as well his meetings with the political leadership of Cyprus, that were part of enlightenment campaign, is among these activities.

Other important events that took place in 2009 were: The Christmas event; prize-giving to the best senior students; excursion of Lapithians over 60 years of age; event for the 70 years’ anniversary since the death of the Lapithian General of the Greek Army Ioannis Chr. Tsaggarides with the “LAPITHOS” Refugee Association; a book presentation of 2 Lapithian writers; event for the senior Lyceum students for the school year 2008-2009 with the Lapithos School Board; the opening of the Municipal Library of Lapithos; the theatrical play “THE MISSING” by Photos Photiades; presentation of the results for the “Family Tree” competition; the event in honour of Mr. Chrysostomos Papapavlou, President of the Great Britain Association, in London; honourary event for 12 Lapithian University Professors and Associate Professors; event for the publishing house “PRAXANDROS”; scholarships given to 40 first year students by the Lapithos Cultural Foundation.

In 2010 several events are planned, the most important among them being the ones against the occupation, that are organized jointly with the other occupied Municipalities, the Photo Exhibition, the event dedicated to the Folk Art of Lapithos, the prizes given to the best senior Lyceum students, scholarships given, the event for 100 years since the foundation of the Lapithos High School, and many more.

The overall activity of the Municipality is also important. It is also worth mentioning the publication of the “News of Lapithos” newspaper that is distributed for free to all Lapithians in and outside Cyprus, the Municipality website with its varied and important content (www.lapithos.org.cy), the data collection regarding the cultural legacy and also the continual enrichment of the Municipality Museum with objects from the Folk Arts of Lapithos.
