Events organized by the Kyrenia District condemning the Occupation

The events organized by the Municipalities of Kyrenia, Lapithos and Karavas, the Refugee Associations of Lapithos, Karavas and the Women’s Club of the Kyrenia District with the cooperation of the Communities’ Association of the Kyrenia District took place successfully. The events condemning the occupation on the 36th anniversary since the cities and communities of the Kyrenia district were captured by the Turkish invaders.

The main event took place on Thursday, the 22nd of July 2010 at the Memorial Makedonitissa Tomb (Tymvos Makedonitissas) and it included a sanctus and a rogation sung so that the missing persons may be found. Also, wreaths were laid there on behalf of the State, the political parties, the Church, MPs, Mayors, Clubs and Associations.

At the event, on behalf of the President of the Cyprus Republic, the Minister of Justice and Public Order, Mr. Loucas Louca, gave an address.

On behalf of the organizers the Mayor of Kyrenia, Mrs Maria Ioannou, gave a speech.

Mr Andreas Stavrinos presented a resolution.

On behalf of the Municipalities twinned with the occupied Municipality of Lapithos were there and gave an address Mr. Apostolos Arethas, Mayor of Milies and Mr. Christos Makris, President of the Sparta Cultural Centre. They conveyed the undivided support of their citizens and the Greek people in general on the struggle waged by the people of Cyprus for a just solution to the Cyprus problem.

On Sunday, the 25th of July 2010 the yearly memorial service for the fallen during the Turkish invasion and the ones who died refugees and were citizens of the Municipalities and Communities of the Kyrenia District took place at the Holy Temple of Ayios Stylianos at the Linopetra settlement in Limassol. The main speaker was Mr. Athos Eleftheriou, Mayor of Lapithos.

The resolutions with the positions of the organizers regarding the Cyprus problem were given on Friday, the 23rd of July, 2010 and Monday, the 26th of July 2010 by the Mayors and Presidents of the Refugee Associations to the President of the Cyprus Republic, Mr. Dimitris Christofias, the President of the House of Representatives, Mr. Marios Garoyan, the Ambassador of Greece, the United Nations, the Office of the European Union in Cyprus and to the Embassies of the 5 permanent member states of the Security Council.
